BedZED & Eco-Village Development Facts and Statistics

Construction Materials

15% (3,404 tonnes) of the construction materials used at BedZED were reclaimed or recycled.

52% of the construction materials used at BedZED were sourced from within a 35 mile radius of the construction site.

Choosing timber over uPVC window frames for the BedZED scheme saved nearly 800 tonnes of CO2 emissions, some 12.5% of the total embodied CO2 for the scheme.

Careful selection of construction materials reduced the total environmental impact of the BedZED development by approximatley 25%.

Other areas of environmental performance

Monitoring results from the BedZED's first year of occupation show that building performance and transport patterns have been very much as expected.

Table 1 shows comparisons with the national average for space heating and hot water, with new homes built to year 2000 Building regulations in brackets.

Table 1
  Monitored reduction Target
reduction
Space heating 88% (73%) 90%
Hot water 57% (44%) 33%
Electricity 25% 33%
Mains water 50% 33%
Fossil Fuel
car mileage
65% 50%

Further monitoring results will be available in Feb 2008.
